FAQ's
- Q. Is the connection always on?
A. Your wireless Internet service is always on 24x7.
- Q. Is there a long term contract?
A. Yes. Minimum 12 month - 36 month subscriber agreement
- Q. What are our coverage areas? What range can
be expected?
A. The range is typically about ten miles from the tower closest to you. Mt.
Penn
- Q. What type of computer is required?
A. Any computer that is capable of making an Ethernet connection can be used.
This includes Windows, Apple and Linux machines. As always, it is best to
use a recent version of the operating system software.
- Q. Is special software needed?
A. No special software is required. Canopy provides the radio management and
authentication software that maintains the privacy and security of your wireless
transmissions. No other special software is required, but as with most Windows
software, it is advisable to have your Windows installation CD available or
have the files on your hard drive.
- Q. I've heard that interference can cause problems
with wireless broadband. How is Canopy better?
A. Unlike other wireless technologies, such as WiFi, Canopy was designed from
the ground up to reject interference. In addition, Canopy operates in the
unlicensed 5Ghz band which is much less crowded than the 2.4Ghz and 900Mhz
bands used by other products.
- Q. Is the Canopy wireless system secure?
A. Yes. Canopy uses a method of encryption known as DES that is much stronger
than the WEP encryption used in WiFi, for instance. Canopy is sold into the
public safety market and is even being used by the Federal government as an
overlay for disaster and terrorist response networks, so you know that security
was built-in.
- Q. Is VPN access supported?
A. Canopy is completely transparent to your VPN. Canopy acts as a 'bridge'
and passes all VPN protocols. However, Canopy does not have any built-in VPN
capability of its own. If your application requires a VPN, you can use Canopy
but you will still need a VPN solution as well.
- Q. Can I get a static IP with Canopy?
A. Yes. One is given with the subscriber agreement. More IPs are available
to users who need them for an additional $10 per month. Static subnets are
also available at an additional charge.
- Q. What are the determining factors for indoor
vs. outdoor installation?
A. The radio technology we are using is basically line of sight. In some cases
you can achieve a good connection through a window with an indoor setup. However,
in many cases the Canopy unit needs to be placed on the outside of your building.
- Q. Who does the install?
A. Professional installation is available directly through RMI starting at
$____. Our installers are experienced, trained and certified as Canopy professionals.
- Q. What is actual length of time for install?
A. Inside installations can be very quick/30 minutes-1 hr.. Exterior installations
typically take about 1-4 hours based upon the site survey and scope of work
process.
- Q. For outside installations is there an antenna
placed on the roof?
A. The Canopy unit is typically mounted on a small bracket that attaches to
the eave or other high place on the building. In some cases a tripod and mast
on the roof may be necessary to achieve additional height. (non-penetrating
roof mount)
- Q. How long after order is placed will service
be working?
A. Under a normal installation procedure RMI can have your access on same
day. Professional installations are currently being scheduled 2-3 days from
receipt of agreement.
- Q. When does the monthly charges begin?
A. RMI begins charging for service upon the date of the first successful wireless
connection.
Normally after the installation is completed and SLA(service level agreement)
tested.
- Q. Can you upgrade or downgrade the original speed
chosen? if so, what does it entail, what are fees? Is new equipment needed?
Will we buy back old equipment?
A. Upgrades are provided at no charge. There is a $50 fee to downgrade. The
equipment does not change.
- Q. Is service assymetrical?
A. RMI wireless service is asymmetrical (the faster 'down' than 'up'). This
is how most Internet traffic flows - "down" (towards the user).
- Q. What are the termination fees?
A. There usually is no 'termination fee' when the Canopy unit is returned
100% in original working condition.
